CHAPTER 23

Alex

Her eyes shot open as they walked into the room. She wasn’t sure how long she’d been asleep, but it certainly had felt good to get some rest.

Phoebe had brought in someone else, and she looked familiar. Again, it wasn’t easy to tell zombies apart, but Alex remembered this particular one from the Addison-Hewitt building. She’d been the zombie who’d escaped through the tunnel in the underground lab.

“Anya,” Alex said as the zombie’s name surfaced in her mind, “super great to see you again.”

Anya cocked her head to the side, seemingly unfazed by the sarcasm in Alex’s voice.

“I don’t recognize you,” the zombie said.

“I was with Chuck when you tried to blow us up.”

“Ah, right,” Anya replied. “Nobody important, then.”

Alex cracked a smile. The very fact that she’d garnered a snide reply was enough to know she’d successfully irritated the zombie. Just like Phoebe said in her books, “Sometimes it’s the small things that are actually best.” She’d added a bit about those who had “small things” were easier to control, but that was a different topic completely.

“Well, at least I don’t have to worry about introductions,” Phoebe chuckled. She motioned for Anya to take a seat. “I was merely going to see if you might be able to come up with a serum to make this one more docile to us, but this little interaction has changed things.”

Anya sat down. “Changed how?”

“You acknowledged her,” Phoebe stated.

Alex and Anya both looked at Phoebe in curiosity. What did that have to do with anything, and why would it change the way Phoebe read the situation?

After everything Alex had read from Phoebe Dash over the years, her biggest takeaway was to always find an angle. There were a few things Alex didn’t like about Phoebe’s methods, and that was one of them. Honestly, she sometimes wondered what kind of screwed up childhood Phoebe must’ve had to write some of the things she did. That wasn’t to say it was all bad. Alex still idolized her—who she’d once been, anyway.

Phoebe grabbed a chair, spun it around, and took a seat. It seemed Anya took notice of that little move and caught on to the reality of who she was working with.

“Are you Phoebe Dash?” Anya breathed.

Alex was kind of surprised she wouldn’t have recognized her on looks alone, being they were both zombies, but that she hadn’t told Alex that even they couldn’t recognize each other compared to what they once looked like. To be fair, Phoebe used to have long, wavy red hair. She also never had a hole in her cheek that Alex could recall.

Phoebe looked down at herself. “I really need to quit sitting in my chair like this. It’s a dead giveaway.”

“So are your quotes,” Alex pointed out.

“True. Anyway, Anya, if you know me, you either agree with my view of life, you don’t care about my view of life, or you despise the view of life I represent. Which is it?”

Anya went to answer, but stopped for a moment.
